This paper outlines the 1990 Centre for Advanced Engineering project which considered the vulnerability to earthquakes of all lifelines, including building services, in the Wellington region. A case study approach was used involving representatives from service companies, consultants, academics and technical specialists. Five task groups considered various aspects of lifelines services, including definition of earthquake hazards in the region, descriptions o f the services, analysis of vulnerability and identification of mitigation measures. Results of this work are outlined. Specific conclusions were reached on recommended mitigation measures and, through wide involvement of service company engineers and managers in the project, further work is continuing in Wellington and the methodology is being adapted for use elsewhere.en-US
