    Abstract
The history and use of earthquake detectors in New Zealand is described,
both for switching on earthquake recorders and for switching off energy sources or equipment in the event of an earthquake. Their use as earthquake alarms, in particular to give a warning when a certain level of acceleration has been reached is discussed. For a warning device mounted in a structure suitable filtering is needed to ensure that the threshold acceleration is related to the response of the structure.
