The writer discusses some aspects of the proposed revision of the New Zealand Seismic Design Code. The degree of sophistication of a code must be related to the accuracy of factual information available and the validity of assumptions that have to be made. The selected level of specified lateral code loading is related to a number of considerations some of which are not obvious on superficial examination of a proposal.
