Nonlinear response history analysis (NLRHA) provisions in NZS 1170.5 were developed 20 years ago. Significant developments in the selection and scaling of ground motion records have occurred since this standard was originally drafted which means the NLRHA provisions in NZS 1170.5 are out of date. To address this issue SESOC and NZSEE have jointly developed a new Nonlinear Response History Analysis guidelines document. The document includes guidance on the selection and scaling of ground motion records, and the number of ground motion records that should be used. Also included in the document is guidance on how ground motions should be applied to the analysis model, how to treat unacceptable response and how to calculate deformation controlled and force controlled engineering demand parameters, and inter-storey deflections. The document also includes guidance on alternative procedures which can be used to determine the seismic design actions on building parts and components when undertaking NLRHA
